Summer Obesity Research Boot Camps
The 2009 CON-RCO/Laval University Summer Obesity Boot Camp is a wrap! This year was as successful as ever, thanks to our boot-campers, faculty and sponsors the Heart and Stroke Foundation and the Dairy Farmers of Canada. This year, organizers were pleased to open attendance up to international students and young professionals; seven attendees came from as far afield as Mexico, the U.K. and Australia. CON-RCO and Laval University have collaborated to host Summer Obesity Boot Camps designed to transfer the latest research information to top young students and professionals, and to create a sense of community among young professionals interested in obesity. The Boot Camp covers all aspects of obesity ranging from epidemiology and public health to cell biology, energy, regulation, clinical management and health policy. The Boot Camp has been held yearly since 2006, attracting over 300 applications. A number of criteria are considered by the Selection Committee, including background, area of interest, geographical representation and overall participant mix. Each Boot Camp consists of nine days of intensive teaching and networking exercise, offered to 24 of the top young obesity researchers in the country. To date, 96 student and new professionals have successfully graduated from this program. Alumni of the events are planning follow-up meetings at conferences and workshops for 2009.
Boot camp graduates value this training opportunity and have given us great feedback. One graduate reported in her evaluation form that: “The Boot Camp was the most exciting and useful research gathering I have ever attended. It gave me a unique opportunity to learn more about cutting-edge research in the field of obesity. This retreat allowed us to establish many contacts and to develop several bonds that will be helpful for our future career.”
