Heather Dean MD

PROFILE: Dr. Dean graduated in Medicine, Queen’s University, Kingston 1975. She did her Pediatrics training in Montreal and Ottawa 1975-1978 and pursued Pediatric Endocrine training in Winnipeg with an MRC Fellowship 1979-1982. She received her first GFT Faculty appointment at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Manitoba in 1982. Dr. Dean is a Professor of Pediatrics at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Manitoba, a consultant in Pediatric Endocrinology at Children’s Hospital in Winnipeg, and pediatric medical advisor to the Diabetes & Chronic Disease Unit for Manitoba Health. Dr. Dean has provided broad external service. She is a consultant for many provincial, national and international organizations regarding the care of children with diabetes and endocrine diseases. At the RCPSC, she served on the specialty committee for Endocrinology (including chair), on the Endocrinology exam committee, and on the Credentials committee. At the Canadian Diabetes Association (CDA), she served on the executive of the Clinical and Scientific Section and is the Editor-in-Chief of the Canadian Journal of Diabetes. She has been honoured with the Charles H. Best award by the CDA, the Distinguished Service award by the Canadian Society for Endocrinology & Metabolism and the Woman of Distinction award for Science and Technology by the YM-YWCA (Winnipeg). Her major research interest is the epidemiology, care, education, support and prevention of type 2 diabetes in youth. A second area of research is prevention of the excess morbidity and mortality of young adults with type 1 and type 2 diabetes using innovative methods for systems navigation.
