Yoni Freedhoff MD, CCFP, Dip. ABBM
PROFILE: In 2004, Dr. Yoni Freedhoff founded the Bariatric Medical Institute and since then it has grown into one of the largest multidisciplinary behavioural weight management clinics in Canada.
Dr. Freedhoff graduated with honours from the University of Toronto medical school where he received the Betty Stewart Sisam award and then went on to complete his residency in Family Medicine at the University of Ottawa.
Very early in his medical career Dr. Freedhoff realized that the medical community, himself included, was not adequately managing obesity. Though many patients requested weight-loss advice he had very little to offer as the management of obesity is simply not taught during medical school or during medical residency.
Consequently, Dr. Freedhoff pursued training from the American Board of Bariatric Medicine (ABBM) and in 2006 he became one of only three practicing physicians in Canada to become ABBM certified.
Dr. Freedhoff is an active member of the American Society of Bariatric Physicians, the North American Association for the Study of Obesity, the Center for Science in the Public Interest as well as the Canadian College of Family Physicians.
Dr. Freedhoff lectures regularly for the Department of Family Medicine at the University of Ottawa and is a regular contributor to CTV's MedNews Express.
Dr. Freedhoff also keeps a daily blog on weight and nutrition related matters at www.weightymatters.ca
