Valerie H Taylor

PROFILE: Dr. Valerie Taylor is an assistant professor in Psychiatry and Behavioral Neurosciences at McMaster University, where she also heads the Mood Disorders Somatic Health Program. She is also the new director of the weight loss surgery psychiatry program. She completed her FRCPC training in psychiatry at McMaster University in 2004, a 2-year post-doctoral research fellowship in Mood Disorders with the Faculty of Psychiatry and Behavioral Neuroscience in 2006, a 4-year fellowship in clinical investigator training in 2008 and a PhD in medical science in 2009. Her primary research focus is on the association between physical illness, obesity and chronic mental illness.

Dr. Taylor is involved in clinical and research work at the Bariatric Clinic at the Hamilton General Hospital and with the weight loss surgery program at St. Joseph’s Healthcare. There she is involved in research looking at the associations between addiction, obesity and mental health. She has also integrated mental health research with a variety of different medical subspecialties.

Dr. Taylor is interested not only in the mechanisms behind mental illness and physical health outcomes but also in ways to treat some of these co-morbidities. She currently runs the Somatic Health Program at St. Joseph’s Center for Mountain Health services, a program she designed to address issues pertaining to the medical management of physical co-morbidities in patients with mood disorders.

Dr. Taylor has published extensively in peer-reviewed journals and has grant funding from the ministry of research and innovation, OMHF, CIHR, RMA, Hamilton Community Health and Research Fund, and Eli-Lilly Neuroscience. She is the recipient of numerous academic and research awards and fellowships, including the Etherden-Suzas 2-year post-doctoral Fellowship, The American Association for Academic Psychiatry Fellowship, and the Wyeth Fellowship for work in women’s health. She has written a book on obesity treatment that will be published in October, 2009.
