PROFILE: Alejandro (Alex) Jadad, MD DPhil FRCPC, is a Full Professor in the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Toronto; holds the Canada Research Chair in eHealth Innovation and the Rose Family Chair in Supportive Care; and is Chief Innovator and Founder of the Centre for Global eHealth Innovation, a joint effort by the University Health Network and the University of Toronto. He currently holds funding from CIHR, Health Canada, the Canada Foundation for Innovation, the Ontario Innovation Trust, Canada Health Infoway, the Ontario Ministry of Health and Long Term Care, the Princess Margaret Hospital Foundation, the Richard Ivey Foundation, and private sector partners for projects that seek to improve health through information and communication technologies. His primary areas of expertise and interest include: eHealth innovation, pain relief, supportive care, evidence-based decision-making, public engagement in health-related decisions, eLearning, virtual communities, global collaboration and transcultural aspects of innovation. Major contributions include the development of a validated tool to assess the quality of clinical trials; the creation of the Centre for Global eHealth Innovation (a setting designed as a simulator of the future, to study and optimize the use of ICTs before their widespread introduction into the health system); the creation of the Global eHealth and eWellness Network Initiative (GENI, pronounced as Genie), a group of people, tools and settings working together to enable humans to achieve optimal levels of health and wellness through the use of ICTs, globally; the development of the Virtual Clinic, an online platform to transform the relationship between patients and health professionals; and the creation of interactive tools to promote knowledge translation and education of health professionals and the public, with emphasis on youth. He is currently creating a platform for virtual engagement, which would enable the creation of virtual communities of researchers, and the involvement of large numbers of citizens in efforts to respond to major public health crises (e.g., obesity epidemic). Dr. Jadad is contributing to the Canadian Obesity Network as Coordinator of the Patient and Public Information Platform and also by supporting the use of ICTs to promote efficient research, development and policy activities in relation to obesity. Dr. Jadad is the Chair of the Health and Wellness Committee of the Royal Ontario Winter Fair, the largest indoor event in the world that brings together the entire food chain and over 300,000 members of the public every year. This Committee is charged with turning the Fair into a living laboratory to examine how to promote the habits of healthy living among members of the general public, and to examine innovative ways to contain the obesity epidemic that is currently spreading throughout the world.
