My research laboratory is interested in the prevention and treatment of type 2 diabetes in youth and the role of exercise for treating type 1 diabetes. Our work spans the continuum of comprehensive physiological studies to participatory action intervention research with rural and remote First Nations communities. Over the past 6 years we have completed series of prospective cohort studies and experimental trials to (1) identify novel risk factors for type 2 diabetes; (2) identify the optimal dose of exercise needed to prevent type 2 diabetes; (3) develop and evaluate novel approaches to elicit behaviour change for reducing the risk for type 2 diabetes in children. Major themes in our research studies include (1) the role of lipotoxicity in the pathogenesis of type 2 diabetes; (2) the importance of vigorous intensity exercise for reducing risk factors for type 2 diabetes and preventing hypoglycemia in type 1 diabetes; and finally (3) the role of peer mentoring for eliciting behaviour change among children living in remote First Nations. We are currently embarking on a series of marge multi-site cohort and experimental studies of youth with type 1 and type 2 diabetes that will serve as the foundation for a national clinical research network designed to enhance the capacity for clinical investigation and patient care for youth with diabetes in Canada.
