According to the Canadian Obesity Network, 25% of adult Canadians and 10% of children have clinical obesity. It is a leading cause of type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, stroke, arthritis and cancer.
Dr. Wharton is a CON-RCO member and the medical director of the Wharton Medical Clinic, a community based internal medicine weight management clinic with locations in St. Catharines, Stoney Creek, Hamilton, Burlington, Etobicoke and Toronto.
Dr. Wharton has his doctorate in both pharmacy and medicine. He completed medical school at the University of Toronto and his residency in Internal Medicine at McMaster University. His interest in ethnicity and medicine led him to the study of hypertension and then to obesity.
He also works as an internal medicine specialist at Toronto East General Hospital and Hamilton Health Sciences and is a member of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons, the Canadian Obesity Network and the Canadian Association of Bariatric Surgeons and Physicians.
Dr. Wharton’s research includes the clinical aspects of bariatric medicine as well as diabetes since 25% of overweight and obese patients have this chronic medical condition.
