Who should take this program?
Links and suggestions will be provided for learners who are preparing for the American Board of Obesity Medicine (ABOM) exam. This program is designed to help you better understand the causes, mechanisms and consequences of obesity while providing you with the necessary tools and strategies to approach, assess and support patients with obesity.

Accreditation Details
Each module within the Advanced Obesity Management Program has been individually accredited and up to 16 Mainpro-M1 credits (soon tobe Mainpro+) are available. The program is expected to take participants approximately 16-20 hours to complete, depending on your pace. Program certificates are offered once all module requirements are completed.

The modules meet the accreditation criteria of The College of Family Physicians of Canada for Mainpro-M1 Credits, Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada and the American Medical Association, physicians may convert Royal College MOC credits to AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™. Information on the process to convert Royal College MOC credit to AMA credit can be found at http://www.ama-assn.org/go/internationalcme.

This event is an Accredited Group Learning Activity (Section 1) as defined by the Maintenance of Certification program of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, and is approved by the Division of Continuing Professional Development, University of Manitoba. Participants should only claim credit for the actual number of hours attended.

The available activities have been approved by the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners QI&CPD Program.

Learning Objectives:

  • Discuss relevant epidemiology and causes of obesity
  • Encourage dialogue with patients who have obesity or are at-risk
  • Assess patients according to American Board of Obesity Management (ABOM) recommendations
  • Counsel patients on complications of obesity
  • Discuss risk, benefits, and options available for the management of obesity, including behavioural and pharmacological management
  • Recommend realistic prevention strategies patients can incorporate to avoid becoming overweight
  • Prescribe lifestyle recommendations for weight loss according to the needs of individual patients
  • Appraise bariatric surgery options for management of obesity
  • Apply relevant guidelines to assist in obesity management among special populations

The Certification Examination for Obesity Medicine Physicians is administered by the American Board of Obesity Medicine (ABOM) through the National Board of Medical Examiners (NBME). The composition of questions for the examination and the sample test questions are the exclusive responsibility of the Board members of the ABOM. To maintain absolute confidentiality and separation between the examination writers and all preparatory or review courses for this examination, ABOM Board members are not allowed to teach, lecture, provide seminars, assist, make comment or in any way participate in such courses while serving on the Board and for a period of 3 calendar years following the end of their Board service.
