Introducing a New FOCUS on Obesity Research
The Canadian Obesity Network (CON-RCO) works to bridge key knowledge gaps so that parents, educators, policy makers and health professionals can make decisions based on scientifically rigorous evidence, and not unsubstantiated beliefs.
To do this, more high-quality obesity research urgently needs to be done in Canada. Lessons learned from current and future research also need to get in the hands of the people who need it most.
That’s why we’ve recently launched the Fund for Obesity Collaboration and Unified Strategies (FOCUS) initiative. Our goal is to leverage resources and expertise from Canadian leaders in research, business and the public sector to raise a minimum of $1.5 million each year toward funding meaningful research, education and outreach initiatives to fill in these knowledge gaps.
In short, we want health professionals, policy makers, teachers, employers and moms and dads to have the best chances for success in preventing or dealing with excess weight.
The FOCUS initiative will:
- Build a strong coalition of private and public contributors whose individual mandates benefit from a high-profile, collective effort to move Canada forward in weight management for improved health;
- Raise funds from private Canadian and global companies who share an interest in weight and health, leveraging this money 1:1 as needed with national and regional funding institutions who will administer peer-review processes so that we can fund research of the highest standards;
- Create and promote evidence-based tools, information vehicles and communications platforms to amplify messages and help Canadians understand their options when it comes to weight and health; and,
- Actively promote FOCUS achievements and the contributions of program supporters to maximize impacts.
More than 6 million Canadians are counting on us to improve our ability to deliver obesity treatments that work – and many more parents want to know how to keep their kids healthy.
