CON-RCO launches regional chapters to leverage local interests and opportunities in obesity.

With 11,000 members nationwide, CON-RCO is the largest organization of obesity professionals in the world. As the network spans such a large and diverse geography, there is a need to deploy CON-RCO at the regional level, with local CON-RCO chapters. CON’s Student and New Professional network (CON-SNP) has taken a similar approach, and has had enormous success facilitating collaboration and networking at the regional level.
The CON Calgary (CON-YYC) Local Chapter was the first regional chapter deployed by CON-RCO, with its inaugural meeting held in August 2014. They have met intense excitement and enthusiasm along their journey, already over 100 members strong, with a CON-YYC Executive steering the ship forward into exciting new terrain. Their first general event was a SpeedChat (yes, the same format as speed dating) held last fall. It was an extraordinary success with over 50 attendees and exciting networking opportunities that really allowed the fabric of CON-YYC to take shape.
Their next organized meeting is an educational symposium with speakers presenting on diverse topics, ranging from exercise to bariatric surgery to journalistic/writing strategies.
CON-YYC has found success in growth and development through maintenance of an exciting and informative Facebook page, through regular and invigorating email notifications, and through short online surveys to the membership to gauge what is desired in terms of content, format and structure of meetings and events. The CON-YYC Executive has elected to have two people to fill each Executive role, reflecting our true team-based approach toward learning, collaborating and growing our local network.
The excitement is contagious! In fact, three additional local chapters have been deployed since CON-YYC launched: CON-YHM (Hamilton), CON-YWG (Winnipeg) and CON-YYZ (Toronto). CON-RCO’s vision is to see local chapters form across the country.
